G'day everyone... Anty from Melbourne ska-punk band The Vaginals took some time out to stroll down memory lane and talk about some tunes for this week's Free Music Friday. The songs in question are from a split EP The Vaginals put out with The Knockabouts.
Our Forum
Alright, so firstly, a lot of this may be lies cos I can’t really remember dick bout these tunes. Our Forum was an aggressive song… Or we thought it was. When I was playing in the Vaginals a few of us were in another band called Kick My Junk. We were pretty rad (shite). Anyway some dude started paying us out on some internet forum cos we were shit. He paid us out under an anonymous name and was just being pretty internet about things (pickin on little thing... whining... crying... etc). Richy (the Vaginals trombone player) got really angry about it, cos I kinda think Kick My Junk were one of his favourite bands at the time. So we decided to write a song about it. The song I guess is us being angry about people being too cowardly to put a face to their complaints/problems and also our anger at someone feeling the need to make a young band feel shit. Also if you listen really carefully (don’t really need to listen carefully at all), you’ll notice that the drums are overplayed.

City runs deep
This song used to be called Keyboard. It was called this cos Guils wrote it on a keyboard I think. Originally I sung the verses and Tom sung the chorus. We changed that for some reason though. I suppose this was our most popular song, or song that people liked the most. I have played in two or so bands since the Vaginals – pretty much at every single gig since the Vaginals quit someone (Tom Lawson) will yell out to play this song. Also, you’ll probably notice that the drums are overplayed.

The Police don't like you
I don’t think I had much to do with making this song. From memory Steve did the instrument parts and Tom wrote the verse and Matt wrote the chorus. We originally called this song The Police Don’t Like Tom. Tom used to get all embarrassed about this titled, so we changed it to The Police Don't Like You. I remember whenever we played this song at gigs the first bit that was just the horns… we would always always fuck it up. Haha.

Party Reggae
From memory this song was inspired by the Aggrolites song Dirty Reggae. Party Reggae sounds more like Little Bitch by the Specials than it does the Aggrolites song – but we all kinda instantly fell in love with that tune, so we’d always be listening to it when partying. Tom originally sung something really different in the verses but changed it for the recording. A lot of our songs kinda make me a bit embarrassed or something when listening back to them. I still love this one though.
