Interview with Sophie Koh

Sophie Koh is a person who makes music of some variety. I haven't actually listened to any of it, but she has a great bio that talks about how she is a Triple J Unearthed winner, and how she has recently appeared on television shows such as Neighbours and Spicks & Specks. It talks about how Ben Lee co-wrote some of her new album, and how she is great friends with Claire Danes! The most impressive mention on her resume, in my opinion, is her Nescafe Big Break win!! WOOP WOOP!

Have you ever taken a hip hop dancing class?

Wow, have you been stalking me? How did you know I'm in a dance class? Am in one right now! I love it. We're performing to Britney Spear's TOXIC at end of semester! I've actually got my class to volunteer their services for my Lo-Fi music clip, you'll see it soon!

I read your bio and it says that you travel between the USA and Australia a lot… what is the worst thing you have ever experienced on a flight?

I had the pleasure of being in an aisle seat where the two ladies I was seated next to kept needing to go to the bathroom every hour. Unfortunately they were both slightly incontinent. I had the pleasure of being woken up by strong smells regularly!

I also read in your bio that the guy producing your album has also worked with the Smashing Pumpkins. Did he have any crazy Billy Corgan ego out of control stories?

Hmmm...yes.

What are your thoughts on Billy Corgan dating that girl from the Veronicas? Pretty weird, yeah?

Are they STILL together? It was rather wierd but you really don't know what people's types are. Maybe they both have a common love for sipping cups of tea and ordering take-out on a friday night?

If you were dating Billy Corgan would you introduce him to your friends and family? I just feel like he wouldn’t be much fun to hang around…

Haha. I just briefly pictured that in my head, me bringing home Billy to meet my father. I think my dad would flip. Then he'll try and put Billy through an initiation process of eating some unbelievably hot Malaysian curry and see if Billy survives.

If you were approached by the Veronicas management to FEAT on one of their tracks, would you accept?

OK, now I really DO think you've been stalking me. I've actually written a song a few years ago which i wanted to pitch to the Veronicas. I thought it would be perfect for them! So Lisa and Jess...you know where i am.

You’re working with Ben Lee too, right? What’s he really like? He seems lovely!

He is lovelier than you think he is. He is so inspirational not just as a songwriter but also as a person. He was almost like a life coach. So positive and direct. I learnt a lot about the music business from our chats. He is a wonderful dad and has the cutest young family.

Do you think that the TV show Spicks and Specks is actually funny?

I don't think its 'HAHA' funny but i think its a fantastic show and great television. Really great for emerging artists and comedians. There's not a lot of mainstream shows on TV that accommodates for that!

Do you ever wear ugg boots?

I was on a 'junk' boat in Halong Bay, Vietnam last year and met this lovely German couple who got obsessed about asking me how much Ugg boots were in Australia. They wanted me to send them some in the mail. They weren't too lovely after that! Who wears uggboots outdoors, and in the snow?

What is your favourite kind of footwear?

Anything Flat.

Are you a spiritual person?

Yes.

Have you ever fired a gun?

No. I don't think I'll ever want to!

What was your favourite snack to eat at little lunch?

Steamed BBQ pork bun from the local chinese restaurant. 2 bucks. Can't beat that.

What is your favourite cartoon ever?

The Jetsons. I use to draw a lot and one of my favourite scenes I'd always do are of people in cartoon space ships flying from one 'Changi-airport looking' Tower to another. I spent my early childhood in Singapore....Flintstones, Smurfs, Jetsons and He-Man were CONSTANTLY on TV.

What in your opinion makes for a really great sandwich?

Pork Belly with Garlic Mayonnaise, caramelised onions with some cranberry spread and nice layer of lettuce on toasted thick bread. I just made that up in my head. I reckon that would be pretty tasty!

How many bananas would you consider to be a good amount?

One for my morning porridge,
Two for a banana cake
Three if I'm feeling rich enough to buy three bananas.

When playing Street Fighter 2 who is your warrior of choice?

You are completely lost me.

Have you ever done any martial arts?

No. But I would love to actually.

You were on Neighbours recently, did you meet Toadfish?

Yeah, he ran past me in his jogging gear outside the studio. You've got to love Toady.

Could you possibly write a haiku about Neighbours?

Karl struts his guitar
Everyone needs good neighbours
